The airline is considering following the example of low cost carriers and imposing a levy for sporting goods.

Willie Walsh, BA's chief executive, disclosed that this option was under consideration at a summit of low cost airlines in London this week.

Currently Ryanair charges £64 extra on a return ticket for sports equipment and easyJet £50.
