Fitness Equipment Centre expands members' options
It was in September of 2007 when Businessman Shuffel Hepburn gave The YMCA a cheque to purchase top of the line fitness equipment from the University of Houston.
It was a matter of trust for Hepburn, who had never actually seen the Fitness Equipment. He was going on the word of personal trainer and one of the YMCA's Fitness Directors, Caudel McNab, who encouraged him that the amount of equipment they would get for the price was a steal.
Members of the Y Fitness Centre were waiting with excitement for the new pieces of equipment they would have an opportunity to use. However, by the time November rolled around and no equipment had arrived, some were beginning to think that the deal did not go through and that the Y did not have possession of the equipment.
But that was not the case.
It was right before the Christmas holiday that the first trailer of equipment arrived.
There were some mis- communication with the purchase order, which began a delay process, said McNab. Then there was the bad weather and flooding in Texas, which further delayed the trans-shipment. And then we had a threat of a late hurricane.
All of that caused delays in the equipment from getting here. But they have begun to arrive and we should expect to have all of the equipment here at the YMCA within this year.
The late arrival of the equipment was more like a Christmas gift to the YMCA and the members of the Fitness Centre. December is normally a slow time in most gyms, with business increasing in January.
So, McNab saw the late arrival as a blessing in disguise. It gave him time to unload the trailer and set up the equipment in the gym, all in time for the start of the New Year, when New Year's Resolutions top most people's list.
Shuffel Hepburn was at the YMCA on Wednesday afternoon to view the equipment. He said that he's happy to see that the equipment has begun arriving
I'm really impressed with the amount of stuff that they were able to acquire, said Hepburn. There are so many variety of pieces of equipment and that should make the gym experience even more exciting. I think they got a fantastic deal.
I'm especially encouraged with the number of young people I see here in this gym working out and training. That's a good sign of a positive thing for our young people to get involved in and to keep them out of trouble.
The newly acquired equipment from the University of Houston which has arrived thus far includes four leg extension machines, leg curl machines, shoulder, neck and chest machines, leg press machines, over 100 45 and 35 pound plates, stair climbers and a few benches.
According to McNab, more equipment, which is a part of the initial order, is on the way.
We've gotten some positive feedback from the members already, said Charmaine McNab, Director of the YMCA Fitness Centre. Some of the members are excited about the new machines, and they're anxious to learn how to use some of the stuff they've never seen before.
So, all of that makes coming to the gym, for them, exciting and different. Now, members can pick and choose equipment. But the best thing is that they can see where their membership fees are being spent.
The only question now is, where will all of the other pieces of equipment go, seeing that the YMCA is already tight with equipment
According to Karon Johnson, Executive Director of the YMCA, consideration has been given on what to do with the remainder of the equipment that will be coming in.
We've had some requests from another youth organization who want us to assist them with some equipment, so we are looking at assisting them, said Johnson.
In addition to that, we may have to look at expansion, although that's not something that's confirmed because when you talk about expansion, you're talking about lots of money. But it's something under consideration.
And we have a gym in Eight Mile Rock, on a smaller scale, and we will look to put some of the equipment there. But we're excited to see where all of the stuff will go.
Johnson noted that the YMCA may be the cheapest fitness Centre on the island in terms of membership fees, while offering state-of-the-art equipment.
